A new start

I have been absent from here recently due to family commitments but am back now with exciting news. I am to be published in the September issue of Staffordshire Life Magazine with a piece on Graduation and Staffordshire University.

I had a deadline of Friday 20th July and Graduation ended on Friday 13th July. I handed it over to the editor today and am happy that I was able to provide both the content and the layout with ease and confidence. I am happy with the numerous sources that helped me make the piece possible and the support that I have seen from friends, colleagues and family. Thank you to all who are featured, I will let you know when it is out.

I also have a full time job now, something to keep me busy whilst my idle hands keep writing to every publication possible to get my work published and to ensure that my confidence in my writing ability increases and hopefully leads me to a new opportunity shortly. I will never give up on my dreams and neither should anyone who wants them enough.

I will keep writing theatre, book and film reviews on here as well as any more band profiles I work on as I have taken a break from those also. I look forward to forging my career into the Journalism industry, it won't know what's hit it!!

Eurovision finals

Congratulations to Baku for a fantastic Eurovision ceremony. The entrants from Spain, UK, Italy, France and Azerbaijan were all great and really set the tone for the ceremony.

I will keep this brief, but I had three top countries to win this from my opinion. Sweden, FYR Macedonia or Denmark.

For once I was correct, well done to Sweden for their milestone win on Saturday 26th May! Below in the link to the winning Eurovision entry.

Eurovision 2012: Semifinal 2

Following on from the previous semifinals on Tuesday, we were welcomed back into Baku, Azerbaijan for the second Eurovision semifinal. So far there are 15 acts in the 57th Eurovision final and there are another ten to be added tonight.

Just like my previous entry, I am posting this before the final contest held on Saturday 26th May on BBC1 and showing my personal opinion for each act.

1. Serbia: The track title...'Love is not a thing...' is an interesting title but we will overlook that. There are unique instruments including a bassoon, two violins, a tambourine, a flute and a pianist. Accompanied by some wellington boots, there is a melancholy intro performed on the strings and soothing vocals from the male lead. I like this track.

2. Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia: We begin with a woman singing, with her backing band plunged into darkness...will they remain that way? Her vocals are flawless and very well executed. Towards the middle, the track picks up to a rock song which includes an electric violin and cello. This song really picks up and is defiantly one of my favourite entries. It certainly is a strobe inducing performance. The female lead has similar vocal tones to that of Tarja Turunen of Nightwish. This performance is amazing!

FYR Macedonia
3. The Netherlands: She is on stage in one hell of an Indian head dress...She has too weak a voice to hit some of the high notes and her cockney accent at times is hilarious. Not to mention the cast of  'Of mice and men' to accompany her and take her to a country and western! The song is not hideous, but the performance element and the props are baffling and leave me looking for the meaning to the song. The vocals are fairly up and down and to me, this is not a winning performance. The commentator's comments reflecting mine said that 'If she took off the head dress she looks as though she could be from Liverpool...'

4. Malta: The opening lyrics are...'Hey look at me cant you see that i'm into you...' Well, no I cannot...The song itself leads me to bop my head but I am not drawn into the performance of it all, the foot dance they all do is thrilling though as it the fake DJ jumping about like a rat on acid. This is nothing more than a generic performance from a group of competent artists. I did enjoy the DJ doing a forward roll over another member of the band and dancing at the front though...

Belarus: Litesound
5. Belarus: The beginning of the track resembles a Queen video and the vocals start off strong, but when the backing singers kick in at the verse it sounds off to me however in the chorus they are singing in harmony. The microphone stands look as though they have been made up from left over car parts...The song is not bad, their appearance is interesting, and with the help of magnetic shoes three of the band bend over backwards and balance spectacularly as part of the performance. At times there are some pretty tacky boy band moves but other than that this is a likable entry.

6. Portugal: The overall song is sung very well but there is not a lot going on with the stage presence. It is a very static performance with the backing singers sauntering in the background and providing a lovely accompaniment to the vocals. The overall song is very nice but not outstanding in its entirety. A finalist hopefully but only just.

Ukraine
7. Ukraine: The singers dress is made from what looks like old curtain tassels tied together to make a shaggy dress...The Hawaiaan head dress is a mystery and there are some digital jelly babies dancing behind her. Her vocals are similar to that of Heather Small. I enjoy the trumpeters as they pop out from behind the jelly babies to perform and then dance joyously behind her. If you get a chance look closely at her hands as it looks like she has barbed wire wrapped around them...an interesting wardrobe choice. This is an upbeat number but not a favourite of mine. I enjoy the dancing though...At the end there is a giant screen showing what looks like a bad aerobics video  or what would happen if you  poured itching powder on a London commuter queue.

8. Bulgaria: This is a song encorporating ten languages...this isn't playing up to the voters at all. The woman is dressed in badly cut white super hero outfit complete with knee high white boots...and the whole thing appears to be made from Gaffa tape...The vocals are nothing special but the language collaboration is interesting. There are live Catherine wheel fireworks on stage...massive ones! This must be breaching health and safety?

9. Slovenia: I feel like I have walked onto the set of an Elizabethan wedding, the lead woman is wearing an interesting wedding dress that seems to have flowers thrown on it. The vocals are lovely though and the song is great. The second vocalist, acting as a siren encapsulates not only the people on stage but the audience too. I enjoyed this entry. It was defiantly made up of jilted brides though...

Croatia
10. Croatia: The setting for Croatia's entry is a gloomy sky and the vocalist is once again very good and the dress is stunning. The male dancers, dressed in netted tops and skirts are an interesting addition, they look like they should star in God of War goth edition...There are three women in the background that look like extras from Grease and do little but stand in a corner as if put there for being naughty. The lightening effects really helped this performance and it's stunning composition. Near the end the two men were playing with a white curtain...everyone loves a good shroud.

11. Sweden: Do not watch this if you are epileptic...there are enough strobes to give the planets a seizure. The vocals are alright but there is too much reverberation to her vocals and there are some questionable dance moves. You would however think she would have taken off her dressing gown before coming on stage...It looks as though the performance is sponsored by Head and Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo and is defiantly a dance track. I liked this performance though...

12. Georgia: As the first male to represent the country, he has a lot to prove. He has chosen to dress as Altair from Assassins Creed...backed up by the cast of Chicago. Never has a song changed so much in 20 seconds. From a ballad sung in a brothel, to a pimp in a brothel...There is a dancer that has the hair of the woman from Heavenly Sword and is wearing what can only be described as a pair of tights that covers one leg and one arm and joins in the middle. The song is repetitive in an irritating way and is just a show of madness.

Turkey
13. Turkey: A catchy ditty accompanied by cape dancers and a sailor vocalist. The song was going so well until he opened his mouth. Is this what life is like at sea in Turkey? The whole production is amateur and laughable. At one point a fantastic break dance was taking place before he slipped on his own cape. The sailor is then transported into a boat, complete with sail made from the capes of his fellow men. This brings a whole new meaning to four man boat. The boat was a good idea and helped the appeal of the performance.

14. Estonia: Considering I am listening to the Estonian 'Troy Bolton' from High School Musical, the energy is lacking however the vocals are so much better than that of Zac Efron. The female vocals are very quiet and don't seem to add much as he drowns her out most of the time. I do like the performance as a whole due to the amazing vocal ability.

Slovakia's front man
15. Slovakia: A very unusual entry for the Eurovision. Beginning with a screaming man, the lead singer needs to realise that shirts are not his enemy, but his vocals are good and the band is full of energy which the audience seems to respond to. The screamo elements seem well placed and fit in with the overall performance. The band's lead singer is defiantly a feminine man and as the commentator said 'you'd never get a comb through that hair'.

16. Norway: The intro to the song has definite correlations to the intro from 'Satisfaction'...not a bad composition. The song is catchy and definitively a dance track. 'I don't know what I am doing tonight' - lyrics from the entry: We hope you are singing on the Eurovision! I do enjoy this entry though...

17. Bosnia and Herzegovina: The shoulder pads on this entry could rival that of Hilary Devey from Dragons' Den. A nice slow piano number, sung beautifully from this years entrant. It is a nice song but that is where it stays.

18. Lituania: Singing 'Love is Blind' the singer looks like a bejazzled Jordy La Forge from Star Trek with his eye mask...The vocals are nice though. There are some spectacular dance moves including a one handed cartwheel as the tempo picks up and the energy increases. A good overall performance.

Following these performances, the countries voted to send their favourite ten acts through to the Eurovision final. Here are the final ten countries.
Norway

1. Lithuania
2. Bosnia and Herzegovina
3. Serbia
4. Ukraine
5. Sweden
6. Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia
7. Norway
8. Estonia
9. Malta
10. Turkey

Such a shame that Slovakia did not get in, I liked how different it was but that's voting for you.

Tune in to BBC1 for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 26th May at 8pm and show your support for your favourite entry!

Eurovision 2012: Semifinal 1

In preparation for the second Eurovision semi final, I thought I would summarize my thoughts from the first 18 countries that battled their way to the finals.

With the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Azerbaijan already promised a place in the finals due to four of them funding the contest and Azerbaijan being last years winners, the contest has only twenty places left in the final. Therefore ten countries can progress to the finals from each semi final.

Broadcasted on Tuesday 22nd May at 8pm, the contest had begun. Below is the order of the entries and my brief opinion of them.

1. Montenegro: This was a bad start to the Eurovision, besides my first thought being, at least wash your hair before embarking on one of the biggest performances of anyone's career but the song was not memorable and the performance was dreadfully boring.

Iceland
2. Iceland: The duet that this country provided was wonderful. With similarities to Evanescence, the voices collaborated well together and the performance element was well thought out. This was a performance worthy of the Eurovision.

3. Greece: The woman in this did not stand out from any other generic female, and the dress appeared as though they could not afford the rest of the dress. The song was alright but nothing special.

4. Latvia: I agree with the commentator on this one, the collection of women appeared as though they were the Latvian Loose Women. The blonde lead was extremely tall and the other backing singers seemed to be hiding in her shadow.

5. Albania: The voice on this woman was incredible and her hair was something to behold. There seemed to be more structured noises than actual lyrics but her voice is very well trained and she defiantly had something about her.

6. Romania: The range of instruments led me to believe that this performance was going to be fantastic. However they did not use the instruments to the best use they faded away into the background. The singer was wearing a swimsuit underneath her dress and the performance was sub par.

7. Switzerland: I loved this performance. It was a rock song and it was performed really well and there was a good stage presence. The vocals were good and it was a very promising entry.

Finland
8. Belgium: The vocals were alright, they were a bit wispy and the performance did not stand out from any other from the past.

9. Finland: The Finnish entry was good vocally and the dress was defiantly something to remember due to the wind machine wafting it about as she sang. Took a little bit of the focus off her but it's still good.

10. Israel: For some, this entry was very entertaining. I did like the large clock at the beginning and it was a memorable performance. The main guy was defiantly a little bit gay judging from the home made earring but the song was alright.

11. San Marino: The social network song...based on Facebook...it was an odd entry and I was left feeling a bit disheartened by it.

12. Cyprus: The song was catchy during the chorus but the women were dressed in very pale clothing and the performance wasn't that good choreographically.

13. Denmark: This is my favourite entry so far. The lead singer is talented as are the musicians. There is a good range of instruments, even a xylophone solo! The drummer showed a great amount of enthusiasm and the song was really well written and performed.
Russia

14. Russia: There has been a lot of talk about this act and from the beginning I thought it was a bit overrated. The faster paced bit is catchy and the women are adorable but I don't see the appeal personally...and why is the oven rotating throughout the performance?? This will be a shoe in for the finals thanks to the hype it is already getting in the media.

15. Hungary: This was another good entry. There was a good chorus, a few tuning issues at the start but they were stamped out as the band got into the performance some more. A good entry.

16. Austria: This entry made me laugh so much! I know in their language it probably came across more normal but it just seemed so rude...as did the choreography. It all linked to being done up the bottom and the light up pants did not help their case! So funny to watch though!
Austria

17. Moldova: This act was also one of my favourite acts of the night. The lead singer looked like Colin Farrel and the trumpets were a great addition to the act. An image that revolves in my mind is 'lampshade fish' due to the attire of the females. Great performance!

18. Ireland: Represented by Jedward once again with their song 'waterline'. They are wearing a shiny silver suit of armour with flat hair. The song was alright and stuck in my mind, I liked the use of water fountains and the ending where Jedward are just stood in a water fountain drenched...a good ending to the show.

The finalists of Eurovision 2012 from this heat are as follows:

Jedward: Ireland
1. Ireland
2. Greece
3. Russia
4. Moldova
5. Hungary
6. Denmark
7. Cyprus
8. Romania
9. Albania
10. Iceland

Congratulations to all the finalists, however I am disappointed that Switzerland did not get in, they were so good! And Austria...was entertaining how can that not have progressed!

I look forward to the next semifinal which will be broadcast Thursday 24th May at 8pm on BBC3.eurovi

50 Shades of Grey: Book 2

So following the ending of book one being left on such a cliff hanger I had to read the second one the moment I had finished. Which surely is the point of a good trilogy. 50 Shades Darker is the second in the 50 Shades series and follows on perfectly from the first.

The outline of the story revolves around Christian and his attempts to win Ana back after their unexpected split at the end of the first book. The couple embark on a mission of discovery and face many dangers in their path to knowledge.

The story continues to be as gripping as the first so that we can forgive the number of words that may have appeared through severe use of a thesaurus. There is one thing that really gets to me in the style of writing that I have to overlook due to pure addiction and that is her use of calling Christian 'My 50'. Referencing the name of the book can sometimes work but in this case does not.

I love how the characters are portrayed throughout the books and the colour of each character. We see the introduction of more characters and a few sinister twists through this book that led me to gasp when reading them. I am completely drawn in by the story and for someone who has never written before she has done extremely well to produce something so page turning.

This book combines normal day life with some of the secrets that people hold in this day and age and some of the desires that we all possess. Anastasia Steele has numerous tricky decisions to make within this book and you feel as the readers, that you are right there with her.

I am still in complete understanding of every feeling Anastasia has emotionally for Christian and the number of times I was nearly in tears because of this story is baffling!

I am looking forward to the final part in this amazing emotional trilogy and know that EL James has created something phenomenal. Now that I have started the third and final installment I am left with a sense of dread as the end of the second was so light that I have to wonder what can go wrong next...this trilogy cannot have a happy ending...can it? One can hope...

How fast can you read?

I have always been one for reading a good book and the fact that I have such a passion for reading has always led me to believe that I am quite a fast reader.

I have read a 250 page book in the space of a 2 hour train journey before and I have always known that I can read faster than most of the people I know. Obviously there are things to consider when taking up the art of reading, whether it be forced for an assignment or for fun can really change how fast you read.

If you are forced to read it for an assignment then you're going to have to read a certain number of pages in a certain time frame and this can cause stress and the reader will usually be easily distracted. I remember when I had to read 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens as part of my university degree, I not only had to read it but I had to look up every third word in the dictionary which can be a lengthy process and break the book up in terms of flow and plot. This brings into question the language used in some books because if all the words are understandable then the book will be a doddle to read.

I am a fan of dark romance books and as you can tell from my previous post I am currently reading the 50 Shades of Gray trilogy. The love story is what keeps the pages turning. If you are reading a book that does not interest you then you will obviously take longer because you will read a page, get bored and go and do something else. If the first few pages do not interest you then the chances are you will never finish the book!

http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/marketing/technology-research-centers/ereaders/speed-reader/index.html

I got sent this link over Facebook last night, and it is a test where you get a passage to read and you have a set of three questions to answer to prove you have read it, you need at least 2/3 to pass the test. It will work out how fast you read the passage and an average word per minute timer, this will then tell you in percentage form where you stand against the national average.

My result said that I read 853 words a minute, and am therefore 241% above the national average...which only helped to affirm that I can indeed read pretty speedily.

Click the link above and try the test for yourself, it's fun and you can retake it at a later date to see if you've improved!

Please never stop reading books for books are the door into another place.

Find below a list of my top ten book series to read, they mainly fall under the romance category but some stand out above the rest! This list is in no particular order!!

1. The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
2. The Phillip Pullman Dark Materials Trilogy
3. The Hunger Games Trilogy: Suzanne Collins
4. Alyson Noel's series beginning with 'Evermore'
5. The Twilight Saga: Stephenie Meyer
6. Becca Fitzpatrick's collection beginning with 'Hush Hush'
7. Lauren Kate's collection beginning with 'Fallen'
8. Maggie Steifvater's collection beginning with 'Shiver'
9. E L James 50 Shades of Gray Trilogy
10. J.RR Tolkein: The Lord of The Rings collection

And one more... 'Wicked' and the sequel 'Son of a Witch' by Gregory Maguire!

Review: Grease, The Regent Theatre, Hanley, May 7th 2012

Classic musical Grease has arrived in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent much to the audiences approval.

GreaseAs my mature nature seems to be taking over, I have yet again been to the theatre to enjoy another knockout performance. This time it was to see classic musical Grease. The hit production started performances in Hanley on May 7th and will be showing at The Regent Theatre until May 12th 2012.

Opening night showed a packed audience and a fantastic reception. The band were a fantastic addition to this production because from the moment the production started they were giving off so much energy that the atmosphere was electric.

The musical encapsulates everything you would expect from a performance of Grease, the amazing cast, fantastic choreography and flawless vocals. All of the favourite songs were performed including You're the one that I want, Grease Lightening, Hopelessly devoted to you and many more.

The dedication from everyone involved was obvious and the cast could not have worked harder to make the musical a success.

The cast were joined by Rhydian Roberts from X-Factor as the angel. His performances on X-Factor always screamed theatre so it is no surprise that he has ended up in theatre, it is where he belongs. This role shows off the best of Rhydian's vocal talents and left the audience in awe.

He has previously said; “It is an iconic show and I think it was voted the most popular musical of the last 50 years.

“I love performing to big audiences. You get that with theatre as, despite the recession, people still flock to the theatre."

With only a few nights left in Stoke-on-Trent, tickets are still available from the box office. You will find yourself tapping your feet with the best of them at this fantastic production!

Read the interview with Rhydian at: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/entertainment-in-newcastle/theatre/2011/10/25/interview-rhydian-roberts-who-stars-in-grease-72703-29656388/#ixzz1uO39bsRU

For all you theatre fanatics, stay tuned for more reviews and goings on in the wonderful world of the theatre. A passion that I have had all my life...from starring in musicals myself to reviewing them...how things can change!

50 Shades of Grey: Book 1

50 Shades of Grey by E.L James is a book for the 21st century. Contrary to popular opinion it is a good read and allows the reader to explore a whole new world beyond their own mind.

E.L James, Author of 50 Shades of Grey
Following the popular trends is sometimes what a journalist has to do to really understand the societies interests. In some cases this can be watching a genre you don't particularly enjoy or an experience you want to know more about. In this instance it is a book that is dragging us into modern day life one housewife at a time. It is not just aimed at housewives and mothers but all of society, however an amusing joke advert for the book (shown at the end of this) says otherwise...

In this case, I chose to embark on a whole new journey and read #1 New York Times Bestseller 50 Shades of Grey. Not having read much of this genre, if any, I had a long way to go to understand how E.L James came up with the inspiration for the trilogy.

In a previous interview she mentioned that she got inspiration from Stephenie Meyer and her Twilight Saga and originally posted it online as Twilight fanfiction.

Th book tells the story of Anastasia Steele and how from a chance encounter she meets successful entrepreneur Christian Gray and the connection in instantaneous. The couple both have demons to overcome, hers being the introduction to a life of BDSM and his being his fear of commitment.

The story is as it appears online, a graphic book of sexual encounters but there is so much more to it than what people say. Having read 50 Shades of Grey myself, the story is a typical romance. There is an attraction between two adults, both have their issues to overcome if the relationship is to survive. Granted if I was in her position I would probably run for the hills but I understand why she chooses to do what she does.

Yes it is true at times I was reading through almost closed eyes because some of the content is so out there but you have to admire E.L James for getting it out there and rumour has it she has tried most of the acts within the book with her husband, how is that for research?

My Personal Choice
for Christian Gray
For a woman to get so inspirted and to write a trilogy of this nature and for it to take off as it has is a fantastic achievement, James has never written a book before these three and I think you will agree that no matter what your overall opinion of the book, that it is a real eye opener for anyone who dares to read it. I was hooked due to the nature of the story line and the darker side of the book is just a part of life. However, as a friend said to me, no author writes the whole truth about every day life or there would be a few pages dedicated to taking trips to the loo!

Having finished the story today I find myself completely involved with the characters and what is going on, it is left at a cliff hanger and leaves the author wanting to know what happens next. I literally reached straight for 50 Shades Darker to begin the next part of an epic journey.

The story is well written and thorough and a real insightful masterpiece in my eyes. I look forward to reading the sequels 50 Shades Darker and 50 Shades Freed.

I am aware that some people may not agree with my opinion and that is fine, I am just explaining that as a journalist, I can see what all the fuss is about it and I am completely on board with this trilogy!

If you are a fan of the books then you're in for a real treat as the film rights have been sold and the movies are on the way. Who are they going to cast as Christian Gray? I think it should be Matt Bomer...just look at him. He's perfect for it!

Which talent show is which?

With all the ‘talent searching’ TV that is forcing its way onto our screens and invading our lives we, as the audience, are a bit overwhelmed.

From The X-Factor to Britain’s got talent and newcomers The Voice UK, UK audiences are spoilt for choice when it comes to which to watch, so I am going to try to narrow it down for you.

We are all accustomed to the notion of going to an audition and trying to stand out from the rest but there are different ways that the shows do this.

Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa and Louis Walsh
X-Factor being the longest running shows of the three has become a pro at creating the sounds that plague the radio stations of today. Formidably known for having honest man Simon Cowell, the process of the X-Factor is simple. Go and audition for three judges and when complete they tell you whether you have got through. This is a singing show at its heart.  A simple premise, however, what you don’t see is the number of auditions you have to go through before you get to see the judges, not all acts get seen which allows me to think…HOW did some of the mode comedic auditions that get shown on TV get through? This also leads me to question the ‘realistic’ aspect of this show. If you want a show aimed at singers and groups only, then this is the show for you.

David Walliams, Alesha Dixon,
Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell
Cowell must have had some issues as he jumped ship to Britain’s got Talent. A talent show where you audition not only for four judges but also for an entire studio audience. Now this must increase the nervous factor but it also allows EVERY auditionee to be granted the great satisfaction of being seen by the judges and not by three random people. This process allows for a wider selection of acts to partake including doggy dancing acts, break dancing acts, classic singing acts, contortionists and all sorts of weird and wacky talents to come out of the UKs talent stream making for a more rounded talent searching show, so if this is what you enjoy, then Britain’s got talent is more for you. The judges for this year are Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon, with the addition of Walliams, Cowell finally has the sparring partner he has needed for years. The chemistry between the two of them is magical to watch!

Jessie J, Danny O'Donaghue, Will.i.am. and Sir Tom Jones
Newcomer to the talent show industry is The Voice UK. This is rivalled mainly to The X-Factor as it is another show aimed at finding someone with ‘the voice’. The set-up is much different to the way X-Factor chooses it’s contestants because the people who audition sing to four judges who all have their backs turned. This allows the judges to choose on vocal talent rather than appearance which is something most talent shows judge you for over actual talent. The judges for this show; Sir Tom Jones, Jessie J, Danny O’Donoghue and Will.i.am have such amazing chemistry that they are a joy to watch alongside the contestant’s themselves. So if you want a talent searching show that bases the judging purely on vocal ability then this show should be the one that you watch! The Voice UK has already beaten viewings for BGT this year and is pressing forward to be the favourite for the year!

No matter which you watch, whether it be one of them, all of them or none of them, enjoy it because the UK has a lot of talent, it’s just how you showcase it that differs.

A walk to remember...

A sponsored dog walk is taking place in memory of Dr Charlotte Hall who took her life after being diagnosed with Bipolar disorder.
Dr Charlotte Hall
(Photo taken from website link
at the end of this article)

Charlotte was a student at Sheffield University and was studying medicine. Her previous history from 2002 onwards included bouts of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and self-harm. When she was at school her obsessions over learning were put down to her ambitious nature and willingness to succeed.

In 2005 Charlotte suffered an overdose and sadly in November 2009 Charlotte died due to another overdose.

Mum, Lyn Wells said in a previous statement that; “"There is a stigma attached to bipolar, yet one in four people suffer from mental health problems.

"When I visited Charlotte in psychiatric wards I was shocked at how many young people were there. There's more awareness about these issues with celebrities like Stephen Fry speaking out about it. But there's still a lack of knowledge and support for families and friends."

This will be the third year that these sponsored walks have been organised in memory of Charlotte.

Louis Roy who is taking part in the event has personal reasons for helping this fantastic cause: “Someone close to me had borderline personality disorder which is very similar to Bipolar. He had mood swings, alcohol and drug dependency issues and attempted suicide at times.

“This charity is very close to my heart because Mind work alongside the NHS to organise treatment for people with mental health issues. They also helped me with my anxiety disorder around two years ago. Some days I still struggle but they helped me and my friend massively! It is just such a great cause!”

The walk will start at The Gnu pub in North Newbald on 29th April 2012 at 11:30am. You do not need a dog to take part and you just need yourselves! The walk will be about 4 miles across the Wolds and there will also be a bake sale and various stalls to begin the event.

All proceeds will go towards York and District Mind mental health charity.

Willowtree Country Kennels and Grooming Salon, Fangfoss are kindly sponsoring the event.

I feel Wicked...

Wicked: Apollo Victoria Theatre, London.
Wednesday 11th April 2012

On April 11th 2012 I turned 21 and gained the knowledge and insight promised on such an occasion. But not only did I get the gauntlet to life and the ability to legally drink in America but I got an amazing privilege bestowed upon me by my parents.

I got to go and see Wicked for the first time in my life! Yes I kid you not, Wicked, the fantastic musical that has mesmerised audiences for years now. I am a little behind the times but what with the recession and things
Gregory Maguire's Amazing Book!

I just have not had the funds, hence the amazement when I got the opportunity to attend after years of dreaming!

I was like a little girl being given a pony at the age of four…The bright emerald lights shone down on me as I walked out of Victoria Station and into the amazing Apollo theatre that housed the best musical I have ever seen.

If you are unfamiliar with the story, it is the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West mentioned in The Wizard of Oz. The musical is based on the book written by Gregory Maguire and tells the story of how hard it was to be born into a family when you are green and the ridicule you get when growing up. It really highlights the issues of being classed as different in the social classes and how to break down the boundaries.

Above all it tells the story of Elphaba and Galinda, two people who could not be more different, yet when they are thrust together in an unforeseen set of circumstances, a friendship blossoms. It is a tale of two friends and the turmoil that can occur, but above all, how best friends stay together no matter what they do or what they consequences may be…

At the matinee performance I was thrilled to join a packed audience, the atmosphere was buzzing and the set looked fantastic. The stage was loomed over by a mechanical dragon representing the time dragon clock mentioned in the book.
The AMAZING Set

From the moment the performance started I was welling up due to being so overwhelmed by just being in the same room as the legendary production. The costumes were eccentric at times but always styled with the utmost respect for the imagery in the book. The voices collaborated with such precision and they were pitch perfect throughout.

I must say besides seeing the book come to life before my very eyes numerous parts touched me greatly. The performance of my all-time favourite Broadway song ‘Defying Gravity’ was a heart stopper. It was the last song before the interval and it left me clutching my chest and so overwhelmed that I had no words for the first time in my 21 years of life! That never happens!

The second part of the story was heart wrenching. It mentions how relationships can emerge out of the strangest situations and how people deal with such grief in their life. The renditions of ‘Not That Girl’ and ‘As Long as You’re Mine’ left me in tears due to the atmospheric tension and feeling behind it all. I was so in love with this show!

The show stopping moment for me and the time I was crying like a baby was during ‘No Good Deed’ because of the pure emotion behind the song and the story accompaniment. I honestly was flabbergasted at how good this production was. I knew it would be fantastic, but I never knew anything could be so amazingly beautiful!

The finale was absolutely flawless, the ending was perfect and the story complete. I was crying up until the final bow was taken at the end of the show and the cast performed fabulously! I do not think there was a dry eye in my row let alone the theatre!
I left the theatre in silence, thinking about my reaction and how I never expected to get so emotionally attached to a fictional story, but that is the power of the theatre and especially musicals. You go there to be moved and to go to places emotionally that you may not ever go again.

Clutching my programme, CD and t-shirt I left the theatre. I took one last look at the sign before departing the city.

The cast were truly amazing though and their names are as below:

Elphaba: Nikki Davis-Jones

Galinda: Gina Beck

Fiero: Matt Willis

Madam Morrible: Miss Tania Mathurin

Bok: Adam Pettigrew

Doctor Dillamond: Christopher Howell

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Desmond Barrit

Nessarose: Lillie Flynn

The songs were spectacular, and if you only have one thing to do before you die, go and see Wicked. You will regret not going!

Blast from the past...advice article

This is slightly delayed...I wrote this last year for a Mother's day special article, please enjoy and remember that my refined writing skills were not as succinct as they are now...so forgive me!

Meet the parents: Mother’s day special
What to do and what not to do.

So you’re in a new relationship and it’s getting to the stage where it’s more than just whispered conversations and candle lit dinners. It is time to meet the parents.

With Mother’s day fast approaching you have to focus on getting her approval, because as everyone knows, behind every good man, there is a good woman. Mother’s day is a time to celebrate the person who has dedicated their life to bring you up and that is no mean feat. You have to be special and make a good impression to impress her enough to let her son/daughter’s happiness fall upon you.

For anyone no matter what age this can be a daunting stage in a relationship. You’re just starting to get to know each other and bang, there are two more people who want to get to know you as well, but these two could make or break your relationship. A good impression on the guardians of your partner is crucial. You don’t want to end up pissing them off and having to fight for our relationship. So here’s my list of rules to follow if you want to make a good impression on the future in-laws. Take my advice, or not, it’s your funeral.

Royal Treatment:

‘When I first met the boyfriends’ parents, I was invited on a family holiday, where I was into the Lobby of the hotel and I found his family – all of his cousins, aunts and parents all lined up, I think he did it to embarrass me– I felt like I was a royal! I was introduced to them in a procession!’

– Victoria Walker
1) First things first, make sure that it is the right time because if it’s too early, you may learn things about each other that are best left until farther down the line. If he admits having an STD, I am sure that kind of thing is something you’d to learn on your own. If you haven’t spoken much since you met, it may not be the right time. Make sure you two are in for the long haul, or it will be a nail-biting experience that you didn’t need to go through.

Sexual Tension

I was at my boyfriends’ house and there was no one in the house, we had just finished having very loud sex and when we went downstairs afterward we found his dad sitting there, he must have walked in half way through!

It was horrendous – we’ve been together over three years now so it can’t have made that bad of an impression!’

- Charlotte Siemianowicz
2) You are always told to be yourself, and I stand by that advice. However there are some things to take into consideration. You may be the perfect gentleman to your lover, but that’s because you’re in love. Around your friends however your flaws shine through. Whether it’s jealousy, violence, a narcissistic quality, obsessive etc, these are the qualities you may want to keep from them, at least until they see a side of you that they like. By all means tell them stories from your past and be as thoroughly charming as possible, after all if the daughter/son is in love with you, there is no reason that the parents shouldn’t be.

3) You have to want the meeting. If you are forced into it and arguments ensue then you will give off bad vibes when you meet the parents, and the mother will notice!

4) BE ON TIME- The worst thing you can do is turn up an hour late and find them sat there after having drunk three bottles of wine whilst waiting for you to show up. They will not take to you at all if you cannot prove that you are punctual

5) Bring a present to the meal – go for something like a bottle of wine, or some flowers, or both, a present for each parent. If you are feeling generous offer to pay for the meal, if you don’t have the money then don’t bankrupt yourself, parents like to know you can support their other half.

6) Do not talk about sex no matter how down to earth you want to be. Just spare the parents the gory details, no matter what they say; hearing the details of their son/daughters sex life is a deal breaker.

Creeped out

‘My boyfriend lives in Wales, so I was invited to stay over for the weekend, that was awkward enough but I find meeting parents hard. I barely said two words whilst his dad spoke about how he would like to feel a fake boob just to see what it felt like whilst trying to force feed me black pudding (which I spat out ASAP) and his mother was about as shy as me. Oh yeah and there was the niece that called me ‘mama’ which didn’t exactly get me in to the good books of his sister. I mumbled my way through it.’

- Anastasia Balls
7) Be polite. No mother wants their child to be with someone who does not know how to form a sentence without cursing in every f***ing sentence. It is disrespectful, and if you have to swear or use slang, at least wait until you have made a first impression. Growing up, most parents were taught full English and even bloody was a swear word, so just watch what you say, and remember, they were brought up to speak proper English, don’t let the side down.

8) Whether you are male or female, the mother’s know that if you can dress well, you know how to treat your partner. If you are male, wear a suit and make sure you look flawless, same goes for the women. If you wear a dress/skirt then you will let the mother know that you can be sophisticated and feminine as well as having good taste. Wearing those jeans and your favourite band t-shirt just won’t cut it, leave your personal style until you know the parents better.

9) Be prepared to talk about yourselves, after all you are there to meet the parents and it is there is reason to believe they will want to know every excruciating detail of your life. They will want you to be vocal about your childhood, previous jobs, hobbies and interests. Try not to talk too much about yourself, but extend one word answers and try not to be shy.

Family connections

'I knew his mum before we started going out and his sister was dating my brother so we all kind of knew each other. There have been disputes between his sister and me, she never got over the fact that we were together.'

- Katy Vincent

10)  Beware of them wanting to dig up past relationships and negative issues, they will want to know if there is any reason you would hurt their son/daughter. If you have been in jail, been arrested etc, be upfront, it may take them a while to get used to the idea but they will have to admire your honesty, if you are honest all the time then you can be assured that they trust you.

11) Do your research. Make sure you know their parents names, you don’t want to call be cat with Mark and Lucinda, and call them Bob and Freda, that will make them dislike you from the start. Ask them questions about their childhood, their professions, and always, always be alert. Try and remember a fun fact about them, if they have an embarrassing story, try to bond with them over a similar one from your life. If they see similarities between you, they can’t help but like you.

12) Before you leave, make sure that you thank them for inviting you out, and make sure that you say how lovely it was to meet them. Smile all the way through to the end and you will walk out of the meeting feeling as though you could fly, and your partner will be right there alongside you.

When it comes to the big meet and greet it can go one of two ways, either they love you immediately and there is no concern regarding your relationship, or you can set up a bad reputation for yourself, where the parents will discourage their child to debate being with someone else, and if they’re close to their parents, you may on the outside looking in.
Compromising position

‘The first time I met my ex’s mother, my hands were handcuffed behind my back, with my arse in the air and her darling son thrusting into me...She had not felt the need to knock...Afterwards she yelled at him for corrupting me, so I think I got off Scott free!’

- Lydia Nicola

Although you need to impress both parents, if you are trying to impress your girlfriends’ parents, always make more effort with the father, as fathers have a protective bond over their little girl, and will not let them go to just any man. The mum is important too as most daughters tell their mothers every detail and will be protective in a more gentle way.
If you are trying to impress your boyfriends’ parents, then aim for the mother, as people say men always look for a woman like their mother.

No matter who you are trying to impress the mother is the quintessential person to get in with, because as is said in 2002 film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding: ‘The man is the head of the house, but the woman is the neck, and she can turn him any way she wants.’

So don’t worry boys, if you make a bad impression on the father, impress her and she will wear him down.

I met my boyfriends’ parents a year and a half ago and they took me on holiday to Austria last year. Making a good impression isn’t hard, be honest, smile, and just show how much you enjoy being together, because it is the son/daughter that you’re in a relationship, most parents only want their kids to be happy, and if you can do that, you are already accepted. This mothers’ day remember your partner and their family, if you’re really in for life then invite them to dinner and prove it.

Good luck, and remember, they could be your in-laws one day!

Category : Band Profiles

With Therion trying to sell out their online store thanks to the uprising of online media sales over CD purchases, and with a world-wide tour beginning at the end of May…Therion are a good band to introduce you to.

Formed in 1987 in Upplands Väsby by Christofer Johnsson, Therion was originally called Blitzkrieg. They have formerly been known under the name Megatherion also.

The band is comprised of Christofer Johnsson (Guitars), Nalle Påhlsson (Bass), Johan Koleberg (Drums), Thomas Vikström (Vocals), Christian Vidal (Guitars) and Lori Lewis (Vocals).
With 13 albums under their belts Therion have changed a lot through their musical career which all  began in
1991 with ‘Of Darkness…’. In 1992 there was ‘Beyond Sanctorum’ followed by ‘Symphony Masses –Ho Drakon Ho Megas’ in 1993.

In 1995 ‘Lepaca Kliffoth’ was released closely followed by ‘Theli’ in 1996 and ‘A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming’ in 1997.

‘Vovin’ was released in 1998 and in 1999 ‘Crowning of Atlantis’ was released.

As we enter the 2000’s Therion don’t let up on their album productions as they release another eight albums in 10 years! ‘Deggial’ began the year 2000 release and ‘Secret of the Runes’ was created in 2001.

Therion took a break until 2004 to create ‘Lemuria and Sirius B’ before taking off another three years to create ‘Gothic Kabbalah’ in 2007.

The latest album to be released by this epic band was ‘Sitra Ahra’  in 2010 and is the best album yet in my opinion.

Therion is due to begin a world tour in May beginning in Uruguay and have listings on their website until October 2012. There have been no confirmed visits to the UK as of yet.

Their best Album: Sitra Ahra (2010)

Best tracks: Sitra Ahra

45 years of comedy!

Just a Minute - 45th Anniversary Specials

For ten days only the legendary radio series, Just a Minute, will be coming to screens everywhere in celebration of their 45th anniversary.

To mark the sacred occasion BBC2 have shown ten televised special editions of Just a Minute that began on March 26th and the final being shown today. Some of the guests that will make appearances on the TV broadcasts will include Shappi Khorsandi, Liza Tarbuck and Marcus Brigstocke.

Alongside the TV shows Just a Minute Without Hesitation was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra on 17th March at 9am which relayed classic moments from the previous 45 years.

Radio 4 will also be hosting the Mumbai Just a Minute specials for your listening pleasure.

In 1967 Nicholas Parsons hosted the first programme and following suit, he will also chair the TV shows as well.

Parsons has recently said: "After 45 years of chairing Just A Minute on the radio, I am very excited to be hosting these special celebratory episodes for BBC Two. I'm sure they will be popular with the show's many fans and hopefully with a few new ones as well."

The panel show had a simple premise. You got given a minute to talk about a selected topic without repetition, hesitation or deviation.

The idea for this show first came about after Ian Messiter was on a bus and remembered his old Latin Teacher. Messiter remembered this being used as a punishment in the 1930s when he was in school. Sadly Messiter passed away in 1999.

Previous guests took the game a little too seriously at first which detracted from the intended comedic value until a regular line-up was created. This panel was then made up of Kenneth Williams, Clement Freud, Derek Nimmo and Peter Jones.
New host Nicholas Parsons introduced regular participant Paul Merton who actually wrote to them asking to be on the show. Once they agreed, Merton took the panel show by storm with his witticism.

With Merton bringing in a younger audience he also brought a new host of people to appear on the show such as Sue Perkins and well known celebrities such as Stephen Fry and Julian Clary.

Parsons is known as the reason for the continued success of the show due to his premise as host. Parsons has brought a new lease of life to the show along with the topics, which in one of the televised programmes created for the anniversary included himself!

Parsons misinterpretations of the rules alongside the guest’s opinions on what goes wrong make the show what it is today!

If you want to catch up on any missed programmes you can watch them on iPlayer, but they disappear by April 12th 2012 so I recommend you watch them without hesitation!
